The opacity level of the stamp beside the brush size menu was set very low. I have installed an old version of Photoshop Elements and it has exactly the same problem with the clone stamp tool. This may not solve the issue discussed here, but after a lot of frustration and searching I have solved the problem with the clone stamp not working in my program.

I assume that the Windows update caused the problem and that some other function has taken over the alt-key somehow. I have found many threads on Dpreview and on other forums through Google from people who have the same problem but none of them suggests a resolution that works. The alt key works normal outside of photoshop but not with some of the tools on the tool palette. When I do alt+click on the picture and then left mouse system show me information 'to define the source point used to repair the image, hold down the alt key'. The new layer makes editing and erasing mistakes a lot easier.
You can always merge them later if desired. Suggestion for after you figure out the clone stamp problem: it works well for me to clone onto a new layer instead of the original. If it still does not work, reset preferences to default.
If it still does not work, click on the little triangle, top left, on the tool's option bar to reset the tool. However, this tool selection should be obvious if you continue to clone with it.ĭoes your Alt key work properly in other functions?: Alt+layer mask to get a black mask instead of white, etc. On the clone stamp's option bar, make sure that 'Sample all Layers' is checked. One other possibility: If you accidentally have the Pattern Stamp tool active (nested with the Clone stamp in the tool palette), the Alt key doesn't do anything.
